Jim & Dawn Minette Collection
A superb example of colemanite sprays on botryoidal calcite, this exceptional specimen was one of the highlights of the Special Memorial Exhibit of the James & Dawn Minette collection during the 2002 East Coast Gem and Mineral Show. This piece is also featured on page 48 of the Jim and Dawn Minette Collection, from renowned publisher Lithographie, LLC. The highlight of this piece is the large colemanite cluster, whose sharply terminated crystals have grown in a radial pattern that mimic the petals of a lotus flower. The deep orange hue of the calcite provides an ideal backdrop for the water clear, sharply terminated crystals of colemanite that dot the surface. This piece is strongly fluorescent under long wave (LW) ultraviolet light, producing a bright yellow glow in the calcite and sharply contrasting blue-white color in the colemanite. A saw and dremel tools were used to shape the matrix on the rear and base of the specimen, allowing it to display very well without the need for a stand. In all, a remarkable piece.
