Wendy & Frank Melanson Collection
A beautifully euhedral crystal of cuprite with an aesthetic coating (and partial pseudomorph) of deep mint green malachite. The cuprite has a dominantly octahedral crystal form, with several modifications that exemplify a partial transition to a dodecahedron. An interesting note, the malachite has a slightly different habit a deeper color on the octahedral faces, a consequence of how different crystal forms (in this case the {111} form) respond differently to the changes brought on by external processes such as pseudomorphing. Another interesting note, you may find cuprite crystals from this locality that have had the malachite removed, leaving a pitted surface. These cuprites can be bright red in color, and have been the source of many large, faceted stones. Formerly in the Joan and Bill Sanborn collection.
